How to file your Homestead Exemption in 2024 for your Atlanta area home

Did you buy a home in Fulton, Dekalb, the City of Decatur, Cobb, or Gwinnett County in 2023?

If you haven’t done so already, it’s just about time to file for your homestead exemption. This exemption reduces your property taxes for your primary residence. For most counties in the Atlanta area, the deadline is April 1st, but check your specific location below. Just click the button to get started. Remember, you only have to do this once each time you move, so you can set it and forget it!

Fulton County

Applications must be submitted on or before April 1, 2024. City homestead exemptions vary for each of the 15 cities in Fulton County. Legal residents of these cities will have their basic homestead exemption applied (if any) when they apply to receive a basic Fulton County homestead exemption.

Dekalb County

Homestead exemption applications are accepted year-round. Current year exemptions must be applied for January 2 and April 1, 2024. Applications received after April 1 will be processed for the following year.

City of Decatur

If you live in the City of Decatur, YOU MUST APPLY FOR BOTH DECATUR AND DEKALB.

Homestead exemption applications are accepted year-round; however, to grant an exemption for the current tax year, they must receive your application no later than April 1, 2024. However, please note that although they can accept homestead exemptions until April 1, they encourage eligible homeowners to apply for any new exemptions prior to March 15 to ensure your exemption appears on your 1st installment tax bill.

Cobb County

The deadline to apply for is April 1 to receive the exemption for that tax year. Applications must be received online or USPS postmarked by Monday, April 1, 2024, to be accepted for the 2024 tax year.

Gwinnett County

The deadline for submitting application, either online or by mail, is April 1, 2024.
